WHAT: Walk for Hope Against Breast Cancer is a family-oriented,

non-competitive fitness and leisure walk along the lakefront to

support breast cancer research at the City of Hope National

Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute The Beckman Research Institute (BRI) is a research facility affiliated with the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, CA. It is dedicated to studying normal and abnormal biological processes which may be related to cancer. . Participants can

dedicate their 3/4-mile leisure walk or four-mile fitness walk

WHEN: Sunday, October 18

Registration: 8:30 a.m.

Walk: 10 a.m.-Noon

WHERE: Lakefront & Trail

Northwestern University Northwestern University, mainly at Evanston, Ill.; coeducational; chartered 1851, opened 1855 by Methodists. In 1873 it absorbed Evanston College for Ladies.  

South Campus Drive, Evanston

HIGHLIGHTS:

- People of all ages walking along the scenic lakeshore.

- Carole McKeon, Walk Co-chair and a young mother with a

hereditary risk for breast cancer. Participating breast cancer

survivors will receive pink hats to wear as they walk.

- Walkers will dedicate their efforts in honor or memory of a

friend or loved one who has battled cancer, or in celebration

of their own survival. Walkers will place their dedication

stickers on a Dedication Wall at the finish line.

WHY: Walk for Hope donations help fund research into: the molecular

origins of breast cancer to seek out what causes this cancer and

treating breast cancer; investigation into the hereditary and

genetic factors that increase an individual's risk; and

anti-cancer drugs such as tamoxifen tamoxifen (təmŏk`sĭfĕn'), synthetic hormone used in the treatment of breast cancer. Introduced in 1978, tamoxifen is used to prevent recurrences of cancer in women who have already undergone surgery to remove their tumors.  to prevent or slow the spread

of cancer.

October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness

Month. The City of Hope National Medical Center City of Hope is one of 39 NCI-designated Cancer Centers and is located in the city of Duarte, California. City of Hope comprises an ambulatory and in-patient cancer treatment center as well as a biomedical research facility known as the Beckman Research Institute and the City of Hope  and Beckman

Research Institute, a National Cancer Institute-designated

Comprehensive Cancer Center is renowned for its treatment and

research to combat cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS HIV/AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome  and other serious

illnesses. The work conducted at City of Hope is shared with

medical centers worldwide, touching the lives of millions of

people everywhere, including in the Chicago area. City of Hope is

HOW: Participants collect donations in the weeks prior to the event

and then walk together on event day. Adults raise a minimum of

$50 and kids raise $15 to receive a Walk for Hope T-shirt.
