BACKGROUND:

FedEx Aircraft Maintenance Technicians at LAX have spent the last
two weeks preparing the ORBIS DC-10 aircraft for upcoming medical
missions throughout the world. FedEx is donating the cost to perform
this maintenance check. On Saturday, FedEx employees and their
families will tour the airplane to celebrate the completion of the
task.
The centerpiece of ORBIS International, a non-profit organization
committed to ending unnecessary blindness in the developing world, is
the ORBIS DC-10 flying eye hospital which serves as ORBIS's central
training facility, making it possible to transport a first-rate
medical school to developing countries, where more than 90 percent of
the world's blind live, and where access to medical treatment is often
extremely limited. In the DC-10's operating room, doctors, nurses,
anesthesiologists, and biomedical technicians work side-by-side with
ORBIS's volunteer faculty -- top ophthalmologists from around the
world -- in performing surgery. Several of the Los Angeles-area ORBIS
medical volunteers will be on hand for the event.
In addition to the DC-10 Flying Eye Hospital, ORBIS International
also manages year-round blindness programs in China, India, Ethiopia,
Bangladesh, and Vietnam. The Flying Eye Hospital's next stop is in
Trinidad & Tobago.
Visit www.orbis.org for more information on the ORBIS program.
