The New England New England, name applied to the region comprising six states of the NE United States—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The region is thought to have been so named by Capt.  Council


    EVENT: East Coast Leaders Form New Amtrak Business Coalition

           A press conference to announce the formation of a
           coalition dedicated to preserving and improving Amtrak.

The Amtrak Amtrak, the National Railroad Passenger Corp., authorized to operate virtually all intercity passenger railroad routes in the United States. Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 in response to more than two decades of continuous operating deficits by privately run  Business Coalition consists of more than 50 business organizations, including The New England Council. The Coalition's membership represents 12 states and the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States). . The Coalition's membership extends geographically from Virginia to Maine. The Coalition will work with Congress this year to secure the federal funds Federal Funds

Funds deposited to regional Federal Reserve Banks by commercial banks, including funds in excess of reserve requirements.

Notes:
These non-interest bearing deposits are lent out at the Fed funds rate to other banks unable to meet overnight reserve
 needed to complete overdue improvements to Amtrak's infrastructure and avoid future service failures or shutdowns.

Other members of the Coalition from the New England region include the Metro Hartford Alliance, the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, the Maine Tourism Association, the Rutland (VT) Region Chamber of Commerce, the Business & Industry Association of New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E). , the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, the Convention & Visitors Bureau of Greater Portland, the Greater New Haven Greater New Haven is the metropolitan area whose extent includes those towns in the U.S. state of Connecticut that share an economic, social, political, and historical focus on the city of New Haven.
