ADVISORY/Study Says Early Childhood Education Lowers Rate of Teen Crime, Drop Outs.

Business Editors

ADVISORY...

--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 11, 2001
TOPIC: The results of a 15-year study that appeared in the Journal of the
American Medical Association claims that early childhood education can reduce
teen crime and dropout rates, according to an article by The Associated Press.
Researchers followed 989 children who participated in the Chicago Child-Parent
Program, which is a federally funded program serving children in Chicago's
poverty-stricken neighborhoods, and 550 children who attended full-day public
kindergarten. Half of the kids who participated in the Chicago preschool
program finished high school, while approximately 32 percent of the kids who
only attended kindergarten graduated. The study also concluded that juvenile
arrests for children who went through the preschool program were 33 percent
lower than the comparison group. EXPERTS: ExpertSource can offer several highly
