WHAT: StorageTek CEO David E. Weiss today chaired the TABD
industry sector "Electronic, Electrical, Information
Technology, Telecommunications Equipment (EETIS)"
meeting to present industry concerns regarding a
European draft regulatory proposal on Waste from
Electrical and Electronic Equipment to U.S. and EU
Government officials.
Mr. Weiss led the industry panel consisting of U.S. and
European CEOs, including companies such as Bell
Atlantic, Whirlpool, Ericsson, Deutsche Telecom, US
West, Nokia, France Telecom, and Qualcomm, in a
discussion on proposed revisions to the waste directive
that will continue to support the overall regulatory
goals of protecting the environment as well as fulfill
important EETIS industry design standards and
manufacturing processes.
The goal of the EETIS is to propose collaborative
recommendations that will enable industry to comply
with standards on material content restrictions, design
specifications, waste disposal at the products end-of
life, use of recyclable materials in new products, and
disposal fees and continue to compete in the business
environment.
The TABD was established in 1994 by U.S. and European
CEOs with the goal of working closely with government
to reduce barriers to the movement of goods, services,
and capital between the two markets. The TABD's
objective is to identify common investment issues and
proposed solutions that represent a consensus among
high-level government and industry officials. Since
its formation, the TABD has been extremely successful
in getting attention on key issues and ultimately
moving the issues towards resolution.
