ADVISORY/Steve Sampson, Former Head Coach for U.S. National Soccer Team, Joins United Nations Soccer League and Tide Detergent for 2nd Annual `Tide Cup' Soccer Play-Offs at the Rose Bowl, June 29-30.Business/Lifestyle/Sports Editors & Soccer Writers/Columnists ADVISORY...for Saturday-Sunday (June June: see month. 29-30)
5,000 Youngsters Gather to Compete and Test Their
Soccer Skills in Major Championship Tournament
in the Name of Healthier, Safer Communities
WHAT: Since April 27, more than 20,000 kids have been competing for
the Mundialito Tide 2002 Championship. The event is organized
by The United Nations Soccer League and Tide(R), a leading
detergent among Hispanics in the U.S. Children and their
parents from California, Nevada -- and even as far as Tijuana
and Armenia -- unite to be one of final teams to play in the
July 4th championship and to celebrate the League's success
in keeping kids off the streets.
WHY: The League is credited with steering children away from gangs
and into clean, wholesome activities like soccer by ridding
local parks of loiterers and drug dealers, and empowering
low-income Latinos to reclaim parks for their communities.
These soccer championships symbolize the success of La Liga's
approach to "community clean up." Tide, known for its stain
removal and cleaning power, as well as its long-standing
support for soccer, is the League's largest corporate
donor. Tide's monetary contributions have quadrupled since
last year, enabling the "Tide Cup" to expand from one
championship tournament to four, with the top eleven teams
from each tournament advancing to the finals.
