WHAT: St. Joseph's Children's Hospital will conduct a ribbon cutting
ceremony to celebrate the opening of their state of the art Center
for Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders. The center will
provide assessment and treatment for complex feeding and
swallowing problems by a team of health professionals with years
of combined pediatric experience. The center will be the first of
its kind in New Jersey and one of the few to provide such services
on the East Coast.
WHEN: November 9, 2000 at 2:00 p.m.
WHERE: St. Joseph's Hospital & Medical Center
100 Hospital Plaza
Paterson, NJ 07503
WHY: Feeding and swallowing disorders affect nearly 25 percent of all
newborns and children, and up to 80 percent of children with
developmental disabilities. Feeding and swallowing disorders can
occur for a variety of reasons including food aversion, prolonged
subsistence on one food, premature births, gastrointestinal
disorders, cerebral palsy, fatigue, environmental issues, food
allergies and birth defects or genetic disorders. As a result,
children often experience an aversion to oral feeding. Over time,
these children may loose the oral skills necessary to eat or
transition to the next stage of feeding. Still others may have
behavioral problems that result in peculiar feeding patterns that
cannot be maintained at school or daycare centers.
