Sprint PCS joins the fight against breast cancer by encouraging participants and spectators of the "1998 Baltimore Race for the Cure" to call their loved ones and tell them about the importance of early detection.

"The Race for the Cure" is held on Sunday, October 4, at Rash Field in Baltimore's Inner Harbor starting at 8 a.m. Free wireless phone calls to anywhere in the country will be offered as runners sprint to the finish line and as spectators enjoy exhibits throughout the morning.

"The free calls allow thousands of participants and spectators to connect with the women in their lives during the national kick-off of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which begins Oct. 1," said Brian McIntee, area vice president for Sprint PCS.

Sprint PCS' involvement in this local event complements the company's multi-million dollar partnership with Samsung Telecommunications America benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Sprint PCS and Samsung have launched a national breast cancer awareness campaign, "Speak Out," with Olympic gold medal skater and breast cancer survivor Peggy Fleming.

As part of this national campaign, Sprint PCS and Samsung also will provide phones and Sprint PCS all-digital wireless service for a national community outreach program that partners breast cancer survivors with underprivileged women who were recently diagnosed with the disease.

The Race for the Cure brings thousands of people together for the common cause of fighting breast cancer, a disease that claims the lives of more than 40,000 women each year. All donations from the race will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the largest grassroots breast cancer organization in the United States.
