     Awareness Month; 10,000 runners expected.

WHEN: Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998 Staggered starts for all races begin at
     8 a.m.

WHY: To fund breast cancer education, screening and treatment projects
     through the Maryland Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
     Foundation. Sprint PCS is a local and national sponsor.

"The Race for the Cure" is held on Sunday, October 4, at Rash Field in Baltimore's Inner Harbor The Inner Harbor is a historic seaport, tourist attraction, and iconic landmark of the City of Baltimore, Maryland. The harbor itself is actually the end of the Northwest Branch of the Patapsco River and includes any water west of a line drawn between the National Aquarium in  starting at 8 a.m. Free wireless phone calls to anywhere in the country will be offered as runners sprint to the finish line and as spectators enjoy exhibits throughout the morning.

"The free calls allow thousands of participants and spectators to connect with the women in their lives during the national kick-off of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which begins Oct. 1," said Brian McIntee, area vice president for Sprint PCS.

Sprint PCS' involvement in this local event complements the company's multi-million dollar partnership with Samsung Telecommunications America benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation. As part of this national campaign, Sprint PCS and Samsung also will provide phones and Sprint PCS all-digital wireless service for a national community outreach program that partners breast cancer survivors Cancer survivors are those individuals with cancer of any type, current or past, who are still living. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) pioneered the definition of survivor as from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life, a person diagnosed with  with underprivileged women who were recently diagnosed with the disease.

The Race for the Cure brings thousands of people together for the common cause of fighting breast cancer, a disease that claims the lives of more than 40,000 women each year.
