ADVISORY...for Friday - Sunday (Nov. 3-5) --(BUSINESS WIRE) Special Olympics Special Olympics International sports program for people with intellectual disability. The Fall Sports Classic is designed as the culmination of the Special Olympics Northern California Fall Sports Season. It is a multi-sport, multi-day event that involves over 1200 coaches and athletes. This is the fourth year that Sacramento has played host to this Olympic style event, providing volunteers & venues for the Fall Classic as well as local program events. Special Olympics Northern California oversees sports training and competition for more than 14,000 athletes throughout a region that spans from Visalia to the Oregon border. They host six chapter competitions a year and athletes train for a minimum of eight weeks and participate in qualifying competitions at the local and regional levels. Currently, twenty-two different sports are being offered to the developmentally disabled. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people eight years of age and older with mental retardation mental retardation, below average level of intellectual functioning, usually defined by an IQ of below 70 to 75, combined with limitations in the skills necessary for daily living. , giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skill, and friendship with their families, other athletes, and the community.
