ADVISORY/Social Security Administration Warns Seniors of Slave Reparation Hoax.Business Editors ADVISORY... --(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 2001 TOPIC: In a recent investigation, the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General reportedly discovered more than 29,000 people fell victim to a hoax concerning fliers offering $5,000 in slave reparation, according to The Washington Post. The fraudulent flier, which allegedly was posted in churches, nursing homes and senior centers, stated that people born before 1928 would receive a refund from the government due to the Slave Reparation Act. The Slave Reparation Act does not currently exist. Those duped by the flier sent in private information including their social security numbers and birth certificate copies. Previously, the Federal Trade Commission stated that people responding to such fliers can wind up victims of identity theft. The fliers directed responses to a post office box in the care of a National Victims' Registrar at the TREA Senior Citizens League (TSCL). The Social Security Administration's investigation found that the TSCL was not involved with the flier and the origin of the hoax is not yet known, the article says.
