ADVISORY/Single Fatherhood on the Rise.

Business Editors

ADVISORY...

--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 18, 2001
TOPIC: Census data shows that the number of single fathers with primary custody
of their children seems to have risen about 50 percent from 1990 to 2000, with
at least two million men raising children alone. According to the Census
Bureau, more than 900,000 of those single fathers were divorced; about 700,000
had never married; approximately 88,000 were widowed and about 350,000 were
married to an absent spouse, said a story in the New York Times. Experts in the
story say the apparent trend likely comes from several factors, including the
loosening of restrictions on women which spawns a growing willingness of
mothers to cede custody and changing gender stereotypes. EXPERTS: ExpertSource
