 will be awash with colored spinnakers the weekend of July 22nd and 23rd as approximately 170 sail and power boats get underway from The Cleveland Yachting Club in Rocky River Rocky River, city (1990 pop. 20,410), Cuyahoga co., NE Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, on Lake Erie; settled 1815, inc. 1903. Chiefly residential, it is noted for its scenic atmosphere and quiet charm.  for the 7th Annual Volvo Leukemia Cup Regatta regatta: see rowing; sailing.

The Regatta is sponsored locally by The Cleveland Clinic Cleveland Clinic (formally known as the Cleveland Clinic Foundation) is a multispecialty academic medical center located in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Cleveland Clinic was established in 1921 by four physicians for the purpose of providing patient care, research, and medical  Taussig Cancer Center.

"The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is extremely proud of the contribution that The Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center and this regatta have made in the progress in fighting blood-related cancers," said Chuck Inglefield, president of the Society's Northern Ohio Chapter. "Our first regatta in 1993 raised $13,000 in net funds for the cause. Since then the Society and The Cleveland Clinic have worked tirelessly to build the level of contributions and participation."

And the effort has paid off. Last summer's Leukemia Cup Regatta generated a stunning $70,000 in income and the 165 sail and power boats that participated have helped to make the event the one of the largest regattas on Lake Erie.

Sail race competitors in this year's regatta will get underway from The Cleveland Yachting Club at approximately 9:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Races on both days will be held on The Cleveland Yachting Club racecourse one-mile north of the mouth of Rocky River.

Power boaters are also participating in the regatta. On Sunday, members of the Club's Power Fleet will participate in a fundraising Poker Run A Poker run (also known as a Poker Derby) is an organized event using a motorcycle, boat, car or other form of transportation where participants travel over a predesignated route and, at designated stops on the route, draw playing card(s).  which gets underway at 9:00 a.m.

Additional support for the regatta is being given by the men and women of The United States Coast Guard United States Coast Guard

U.S. military service that enforces maritime laws. It is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security; in wartime it functions as part of the U.S. Navy. The Coast Guard enforces federal laws on the high seas and waters within U.S.
 assigned to the Cleveland Moorings on East Ninth Street across from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. For the fourth year in a row, The Coast Guard will host Operation Rescue Summer. Operation Rescue Summer is a base open house for children who are undergoing treatment at the Clinic for leukemia-related disorders and who will be released for the weekend to attend the regatta. For most this will be their only summer vacation Summer vacation (also called summer holidays or summer break) is a vacation in the summertime between school years in which students are off for 3 months, depending on the country and district. . Personnel from Station Cleveland Harbor, Marine Safety Office Cleveland, the Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay and the Ninth District Command Center are volunteering their time to provide base and cutter tours. The event wraps up with an ice cream party held in the Officers Club.

Operation Rescue Summer will be held on Sunday, July 23rd from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon at the U. S. Coast Guard Cleveland Moorings.

Photo Opportunities: The Cleveland Yachting Club will have power boats available to take photographers out to the race course on either day. The Coast Guard has also invited the media to attend the Operation Rescue Summer open house at the Cleveland Moorings on Sunday the 23rd. All funds raised at the Volvo Leukemia Cup Regatta will be directed to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for use in supporting research and programs here in Northeastern Ohio. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission is to work for a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease Hodgkin's disease, a type of cancer of the lymphatic system. First identified in 1832 in England by Thomas Hodgkin, it is a type of malignant lymphoma. Incidence peaks in young adults and the elderly.  and myeloma myeloma /my·elo·ma/ (mi?e-lo´mah) a tumor composed of cells of the type normally found in the bone marrow.
