WHAT/WHO:       Sen. Jack O'Connell (D-San Luis Obispo), member of the
                Senate Education Committee and candidate for State
                Superintendent of Public Instruction, will tour
                Tarzana Elementary School, one of the state's
                top-performing schools, on Friday, Nov. 2. The tour
                will be led by Dr. Kit Marshall, chief executive
                officer of Action Learning Systems Inc. (ALS). ALS is
                a private company that forms long-term partnerships
                with schools in California seeking to improve student
                achievement.

                Topics to be discussed include the Standards-based,
                student-led parent conferencing program and the
                Comprehensive School Reform program. These programs
                have been successfully implemented by ALS and have
                been well received by parents and teachers.
