ADVISORY/Self-Healing Computers: IEEE Spectrum To Host A Panel On Autonomic Computing at COMDEX Fall 2002.Business Editors COMDEX The former, premier computer trade show in the U.S. Although it grew into an end user event, it was originally created for dealers and distributors (it was the COMputer Dealers EXposition). Fall 2002 ADVISORY...for Wednesday Wednesday: see week. (Nov. 20) --(BUSINESS WIRE)
WHAT: Should a computer suddenly shut down or cease to function
correctly, the average end user is left helpless. But what if
computers could solve their own problems, without the need to make
an appointment and pay a fee for a computer technician? Companies
like Sun Microsystems, Microsoft, and IBM are researching new
technologies that will provide computers with the tools needed to
identify and self-rectify any shutdowns or disruptions in
efficient functionality. A panel discussion, led by IEEE Spectrum
Senior Associate Editor Harry Goldstein will explore
next-generation computers that can configure, maintain, and repair
themselves without the need for human intervention. Mr. Goldstein
will be joined by the following experts in this field:
-- Alan Ganek, VP of Autonomic Computing, IBM
-- Surajit Chaudhuri, Senior Researcher and Manager, Data
Management, Exploration and Mining, Microsoft Research
-- Wolfgang Gentzsch, Director, Grid Computing, Sun Microsystems
WHEN: Wednesday, November 20, 10:30 - 11:45 a.m.
WHERE: COMDEX FALL 2002, Las Vegas Convention Center, North 252
DETAILS: IEEE Spectrum is producing "Crystal Ball: Technology
Infusions," a five-panel track part of the business technology
conference at COMDEX Fall 2002. Each panel focuses on one of five
emerging technologies that are likely to have a significant impact
on the IT industry within the next three to five years. In
addition to autonomic computing, technologies to be explored are
organic electronics, gallium nitride, speech recognition
technology and the semantic Web.
IEEE Spectrum is a top science and technology magazine whose core
strength is its ability to round up top industry professionals to
provide informed, expert commentary on the most important science
and technology concerns of our time in each issue. The magazine
serves as a source of information on trends in science and
technology for everyone from the computer programmer, to the CEO
to the average consumer.
INTERVIEWS: Immediately following each panel, IEEE Spectrum editors
and panelists will be available for interviews and Q&A at the
Media/Analyst Facility, Central Hall 2 (C2 Entrance) - Room B. To
