WHAT: It's Christmas in June as The Seattle Aquarium The Seattle Aquarium is a public aquarium located on Pier 59 on Seattle, USA's Elliot Bay waterfront. Run by the city, it opened on May 20, 1977. After the closure of Ivar's Aquarium in 1956, the city was at a loss for its major attraction.  holds

a news conference to announce a prestigious national

designation and receive a wishlist of gifts and

commitments of immeasurable long-term support from

fourteen federal agencies. The designation from

Coastal America, a multi-agency partnership

including the Executive Office of the President, has

been awarded to a select handful of educational

facilities. The Coastal America Partnership was

established in 1992 to more effectively address

critical coastal environmental issues facing our

nation.

The designation, gifts and federal commitments will

be presented to Seattle Mayor Paul Schell Paul Schell, born Paul Schlachtenhaufen on October 8, 1937, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, was the 50th mayor of Seattle, Washington. His four-year term as mayor began on January 1, 1998.

Schell first ran for mayor in 1977, but lost to Charles Royer.

Superintendent Ken Bounds and Cindi Shiota - who

leaves her position as Aquarium Director in July,

after spending much of the past twelve years moving

the facility towards a recognition and partnership

WHERE: The news conference will be held at the West End of The Seattle Aquarium overlooking Elliott Bay Elliott Bay is the body of water on which Seattle, Washington is located. A line drawn from Alki Point in the south to West Point in the north serves to mark the generally accepted division between the bay and the open sound. .
