ADVISORY/Searching for the Family of Songwriter Red Sovine: Perdue Truckers Prepare to Celebrate the 20Th Anniversary of Operation Teddy Bear.News/Assignment/Entertainment Editors ADVISORY...for Saturday Saturday: see week; Sabbath. (Dec. 7) --(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 20, 2002 Can you help us find this country performer's kin?
WHAT: For 20 years the truck drivers of Perdue Farms Incorporated
have gathered each December to fulfill the spirit of the Red
Sovine recording "Teddy Bear" by taking residents of the Holly
Center on rides in their rigs. The event serves to kick off
the Christmas holidays for the residents and staff of the
Holly Center (a State of Maryland residential facility for
people with mental and physical disabilities) and the Perdue
drivers.
WHY: The program, started by two Perdue Safety Associates in 1982,
began with a handful of trucks and drivers. This year's event
will include more than 35 trucks. With their rigs decorated in
the holiday spirit, the drivers take the residents on an
11-mile loop around Salisbury, Maryland and compete for the
honor of "Best Dressed Rig."
While Mr. Sovine has passed away, Perdue wants to remember him
on the 20th anniversary of the program he inspired. The
company is searching for the family of Red Sovine, the author
of "Teddy Bear". The drivers hope to have members of the
family attend the event and ride in one of the rigs to help
celebrate the milestone anniversary of the program.
