EVENT: The Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia and the
Greater Philadelphia Baptist Association will welcome
1,200 volunteers from "World Changers," a student
volunteer initiative of the Southern Baptist
Convention/North American Mission Board. The student
volunteers will participate in dozens of neighborhood
beautification projects around the city throughout the
summer as part of a continued neighborhood
revitalization effort.
Approximately 200-300 students from "World Changers"
and other youth volunteer teams will visit
Philadelphia each week throughout the summer to
support volunteer projects for The Salvation Army and
other local churches.
Rev. Dr. Wilson Goode will visit one of the first
groups of student volunteers at The Salvation Army's
Temple Corps Community Center in Philadelphia. The
youth volunteers will paint the exterior of the
community center and the interior of the gymnasium and
repair the playground for neighborhood children and
youth residents of the adjoining Red Shield Family
Shelter.
The students, from middle school through college, will
join professional builders, adult chaperons, crew
leaders, neighborhood residents and church members to
revitalize these communities through various
service projects. The Salvation Army volunteer
projects throughout the summer will include painting
apartments in the residences, building community
gardens, repairing playgrounds, painting fences, and
organizing block clean-ups.
