Lauder, the noted Jewish philanthropist and former U.S. Ambassador to Austria, at which he will discuss plans for a special commemoration ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. Kristallnacht took place on November 9 and 10, 1938, and marked the beginning of formal Nazi atrocities against Jews in Germany and throughout Europe. Council are sponsoring a special evening at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan on Sunday, November 8. Participants will include four living witnesses to Kristallnacht, including the rabbi rabbi [Heb.,=my master; my teacher], the title of a Jewish spiritual leader. The role of the rabbi has undergone a number of transformations. In the Talmudic period, rabbis were primarily teachers and interpreters of the Torah. and cantor cantor [Lat.,=singer], a singer or chanter, especially one who performs the solo chants of a church service. The office of cantor, at first an honorary one, originated in the Jewish synagogues, in which from early times it was the custom to appoint a lay member to from the main synagogue synagogue (sĭn`əgŏg) [Gr.,=assembly], in Judaism, a place of assembly for worship, education, and communal affairs. The origins of the institution are unclear. One tradition dates it to the Babylonian exile of the 6th cent. B.C. in Mannheim, Germany. A similar commemoration, with the same witnesses, will take place in Mannheim on Monday, November 9. These events will serve as a continuation of The Ronald S.
