RedBack will be demonstrating its "multiple context" functionality, which enables new types of service delivery for network service providers (NSPs) and supports the carrier's wholesale data transport model. RedBack will also be showing its newly announced support for PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using  over Ethernet, which will make it easier for NSPs to provision services to support multiple users across a dedicated DSL DSL

, cable, or wireless connection. This new capability will also simplify the end-user experience.

The SMS 1000 is a high-density, highly intelligent networking device that enables the rapid deployment of high-speed DSL services to corporations, small businesses and residential subscribers. The product bridges the operational gap between telco-based DSL equipment in the Central Office and service provider backbone routers. Deployed by carriers at a Network Access Point or by service providers at a data center, the SMS 1000 accepts a high concentration of data traffic from multiple DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs), each of which may support a different vendor-specific DSL implementation. It applies user configuration and management, and then grooms the traffic to offload backbone routers of the heavy processing that can limit the scalability of high-speed networks.
