PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 2004

Officials from the federal, state and local governments will pledge their cooperative efforts to protect and improve the health of the Schuylkill River The Schuylkill River, most often pronounced "SKOO-kull" (IPA: /'sku:kəɫ/), is a river in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is a designated Pennsylvania Scenic River.  by signing the Schuylkill Action Network Constitution on Monday, May 3.

The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m., culminating with the signing of the constitution at 10:45.

Among other things, the constitution asserts "The people of the Schuylkill River watershed, including generations yet to come, have a right to safe drinking water drinking water

supply of water available to animals for drinking supplied via nipples, in troughs, dams, ponds and larger natural water sources; an insufficient supply leads to dehydration; it can be the source of infection, e.g. leptospirosis, salmonellosis, or of poisoning, e.g.
, a river that is a recreational and economic resource and a watershed that sustains healthy habitats for all life in this region." The Schuylkill River and its tributaries provide drinking water for approximately 1.75 million people.

Where: Fairmount Water Works The Fairmount Water Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was the first municipal waterworks in the United States. Designed in 1812 by Frederick Graff and built between 1819 and 1822 it operated until 1909, winning praise for its design and becoming a popular tourist attraction.  Interpretive Center, 640 Water Works Drive, on the Schuylkill River between Boathouse Row and the Philadelphia Museum of Art Philadelphia Museum of Art, established in 1875, chartered in 1876. When the city of Philadelphia planned to erect a building to house the Centennial Exposition of 1876, provision was made to keep the building permanently occupied; the Pennsylvania Museum and School .

Why: The signing of the Schuylkill Action Network Constitution kicks off the Philadelphia Water Department's week-long celebration of National Drinking Water Week, May 2 to May 8. Activities related to Drinking Water Week will take place daily at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center.
