WHAT: "Spirit of Community" award presentation for
Jacksonville-area student volunteers. The Prudential
Spirit of Community Awards program honors outstanding
student volunteer efforts in partnership with the National
Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
WHO: 25 Local Honorees will be accompanied by their parents,
teachers and school board representatives, as they are
honored for their volunteer efforts in the Jacksonville
community and presented with a certificate of recognition.

Finalist: Gloria Cheung, 12, a seventh-grader at Howard
W. Bishop Middle School in Gainesville, Fla. created a
teen-run summer day camp designed to develop young
children's interest in reading, art and music. Having won
awards for her reading ability, piano playing and drawing
skills, Cheung wanted to share her talents with others -
especially children in need of a helping hand.

HIGHLIGHTS: Guest Speaker - U.S. Navy Senior Chief Arden Battle
Battle, a machinist mate senior chief with the U.S. Navy,
currently serves as volunteer coordinator for the USS John
F. Kennedy aircraft carrier. In this role, Arden
coordinates approximately 50 sailors who volunteer at the
Lola Culver Elementary School by reading to children,
helping with homework and assisting teachers with lesson
plans. Battle has also volunteered with several community
organizations by collecting children's clothing for the
City Rescue Mission, serving as coordinator for Special
Olympics and coordinating Christmas collection programs on
the naval base for the Salvation Army. President George W.
Bush recently recognized Senior Chief Battle as an example
of dedication as created by the USA Freedom Corps
initiative to foster an American culture of service,
citizenship and responsibility.

Camp Fire USA is a nationwide youth organization that began on March 17, 1910 as Camp Fire Girls. The organization has been co-ed since 1975 and has youth from pre-kindergarten through age 21. councils and Volunteer Centers were also eligible to nominate student volunteers for the awards program. All local honorees were reviewed by state-level judges, who selected state honorees and distinguished finalists based on criteria such as personal initiative, creativity, effort, impact and personal growth.
