WHAT: Placido Domingo, beginning his first season as artistic director of Los
Angeles Opera, will announce some of his plans for the 2001-2002 season and
beyond. He will also introduce Kent Nagano, principal conductor designate of
Los Angeles Opera. WHEN: Monday, Sept. 11, 10 a.m. WHERE: Grand Hall, Dorothy
Chandler Pavilion, 135 North Grand Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90012. FOR INFO: To

available. BACKGROUND: Los Angeles Opera created a sensation with its debut
production of Verdi's Otello, starring Domingo, in October 1986. Now, under the
leadership of Domingo in his role of artistic director, Los Angeles Opera's
future in the international opera world stands to flourish with new
productions, world premieres and spectacular revivals, supported by a
continually growing subscriber base.


Domingo served as the company's artistic consultant beginning in

1984. In 1995, he was named artistic advisor and principal

guest conductor. In this capacity, he advised the company on a

wide range of artistic matters and performed regularly with

the company as both singer and conductor, having sung his

Award-winning Director John Schlesinger, and Handel's baroque

masterpiece Giulio Cesare Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar in Egypt) is an Italian opera in three acts by George Frideric Handel. The libretto was written by Nicola Francesco Haym. Performance history
It was first performed in London on February 20, 1724.
. The season also includes a new

production of Rossini's La Cenerentola La Cenerentola, ossia La bontà in trionfo is an operatic dramma giocoso by Gioacchino Rossini. The libretto was written by Jacopo Ferretti, based on the fairy tale Cinderella. Rossini's La Cenerentola was first performed in Rome in 1817. . Herbert Ross' La

boheme, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Pasquale Don Pasquale is an opera buffa, or comic opera, in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti. The composer and Giovanni Ruffini wrote the Italian libretto after Angelo Anelli's libretto for Stefano Pavesi's Ser Marcantonio (1810). , and Tosca return to

Los Angeles with all new casts.

The season also includes concerts on September 10, 13 and 15 with

Domingo singing his first performances of Wagner in Los

Angeles (Act I of Die Walkure and Act II of Parsifal) with the

world famous Kirov Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev Valery Abisalovich Gergiev (Ossetic: Гергиты Абисалы фырт Валери , and

singers Eva Johansson, Fyodor Kuznetsov, Linda Watson and Alan

Held.
