What: Dr. Louis Samuels, professor of surgery at The Drexel
University College of Medicine, will deliver the keynote
address on the "Marriage of Man and Machine" to Drexel
students, faculty and staff tomorrow at Drexel's
Convocation ceremony, the formal celebration of the new
academic year.
Dr. Samuels performed the world's fifth AbioCor
replacement heart surgery last year at Hahnemann
University Hospital. As he concludes his address, Dr.
Samuels will welcome to the podium William Miller, who
underwent a procedure in July to implant a left
ventricular assist device to increase his heart's blood
flow, as a successful example of the marriage between man
and machine.
This year, the founders and histories of Drexel, Hahnemann
and Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania will be
commemorated at Convocation. Processing to a choral and
organ rendition of "Pomp and Circumstance," Convocation's
chief marshal will lead faculty and staff in the cap, gown
and hood of their academic regalia to their seats.
