WHAT: The Program Committee and the International Section of the
Public Relations Society of America (National Capital
Chapter) will present a seminar on wartime media
embedding.
The program, entitled "Pillow Talk: The Influence of
Embedded Media on War Coverage," will explore numerous
questions: does embedding affect the impartiality of
participating journalists? What are the advantages and
disadvantages for the viewing public? Do journalists
endure censorship or other forms of control as a result of
embedding? What opportunities exist for non-embedded
journalists in such an environment? There will also be
time for questions from the audience.
WHO: The panel of distinguished speakers will include Mr. Greg
Kelly (Fox Television), who was the first television
reporter to deliver live pictures of U.S. forces
infiltrating Baghdad on April 5, 2003; Mr. William
Branigin (Washington Post), who was embedded with the U.S.
Army's 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq; Mr. Robert Michaud
(Belo Broadcasting), who covered the Iraq conflict as a
non-embedded photojournalist; Mr. Martin Turner,
Washington Bureau Chief for the BBC; and Rear Admiral T.
McCreary, Chief of Information, U.S. Navy, who played a
key role in developing the embedding system.
