Bennett’s first gold medal came in the 800 meter freestyle race at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

She was a standout pole vaulter for the Idaho State University women's track and field team in the mid-1990s.

As a child, Wilkinson was a gymnast, but had to give up on the sport after a growth spurt during puberty made her too tall to continue.
