Although sometimes it appears in Renaissance design, as in the Certosa di Pavia, it is almost exclusively a medieval  West Energy's West Phoenix Power Station. Construction on the combined-cycle unit, which will meet the electricity needs of more than 100,000 homes, began last summer. The security of electricity supply to Arizona and other western states depends on new power plants being constructed and coming on-line.

The unit, which is scheduled to begin commercial operations next week, is the first new generating unit designed to serve the Phoenix metropolitan area since the last of three units at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, a nuclear power plant located in Wintersburg, Arizona, about 45 miles (80 km) west of central Phoenix, is currently the largest nuclear generation facility in the United States, producing over 30,000 gigawatt hours of electricity annually  began operating in 1988. Palo Verde is operated by APS, a sister company of Pinnacle West Energy.

Unit 4 is at the heart of more than 500 megawatts of new generation Pinnacle West Energy is adding to its system this summer. Also, construction began in December on two of four planned 530-megawatt units at the Redhawk Power Station. Those units will be commercially operational by June 2002. Construction on another 530-megawatt unit at the West Phoenix station will begin later this summer.
