WHAT: Sounds of Blackness is slated to appear in Sam Goody Central
on Tuesday, November 26, where they will perform and autograph
copies of their recent album, Soul Symphony.
WHO: Sounds of Blackness, a 40-person musical ensemble consisting
of 30 vocalists and a 10-piece orchestra, is directed by Gary
Hines. The group combines traditional African music with urban
soul and has become one of the most popular contemporary
gospel groups today.
The group formed in 1969 at Macalester College in St. Paul,
Minn. as a way to embrace African-American music and create
sounds that would unify people and glorify the human spirit.
The group remained a regional attraction until 1989 when they
signed a record deal, which lead to the production of six
albums, strong reviews and a performance at the White House
for New Year's Eve in 1999.
Soul Symphony, the groups seventh album, will be released
nationally on Nov. 26.
