Afeni Shakur Afeni Shakur (born January 10, 1947) is the mother of American rapper Tupac Shakur, and was an important member of the Black Panther Party.

Shakur was born Alice Faye Williams in Lumberton, North Carolina to Rosa Belle and Walter Williams, Jr.

WHAT: Slain rapper Tupac Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur, will sign
     copies of the recently published book, "The Rose That Grew From
     Concrete," a compilation of more than 100 poems written by Tupac
     five years before his death.

WHO: Afeni Shakur is known to many as the much-loved "Mama" in Tupac's
     song "Dear Mama." The woman who raised Tupac as a boy will now
     make a rare appearance to sign her son's posthumously published
     book, "The Rose That Grew From Concrete."

     Many of his peers say Tupac Shakur did more for the rap industry
     than any other rapper in history. His lyrics spoke volumes about
     his life and the hardships that followed him throughout it.
     Through his twelve albums, nine of which went platinum or gold,
     his popularity spread worldwide. At the age of 25, at the prime
     of his career, the actor/rapper was gunned down by an unknown
     assailant. Now, through this new book of poems written by Tupac
     at age 19, his fans are able to get a better look into his very
     private life.
