coffee to 5 cents. The public is invited to attend.

winner and 20 friends, or dinner for two and tickets to a
Dodger baseball game.

When: - Tuesday, Oct. 6
4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Who: - A special part of the celebration will include a
historical-monument designation by Mayor Richard Riordan,
as Philippe's is one of the very few businesses in the
city with 90 years of service. The mayor had ordered that
a permanent sign be posted on the street lamp in front of
Philippe's (at Alameda and Ord Streets) that proclaims its
90th anniversary.
Veteran Los Angeles television personality Huell Howser,
host of the weekly "Visiting With Huell Howser" TV show,
will serve as the emcee of the event. Famed Los Angeles
Dodger peanut vendor Roger Owens will also be in
attendance, demonstrating his celebrated technique by
tossing 800 bags of peanuts to customers in the festive
line that is sure to wind its way around the block. Other
personalities are also expected to attend.
Why: - With all of the businesses that come and go in Los
Angeles, Philippe's located in the heart of downtown L.A.
remains one of the "tried and true," surviving wars,
recessions, changing neighborhoods and riots.
Established in 1908 by French immigrant Philippe Mathieu,
Philippe's began as a delicatessen and sandwich shop.
In 1918, Philippe was preparing a sandwich for a policeman
and accidentally dropped the French roll into the
drippings from a roasting pan. The policeman liked the
sandwich and came back the next day with some friends to
order the sandwich "dipped" in the meat pan. From that
day forward, a new sandwich was born -- the "French Dip."
Philippe's has been owned and operated by the same family
since 1927, and is still the only restaurant in Los
Angeles where you can order a 10-cent cup of coffee.
