WHAT: The world-famous Palm Springs Aerial Tramway The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway in Palm Springs, California opened in September 1963 as a way of getting from the floor of the Coachella Valley to near the top of San Jacinto Peak.  invites you to a special re-opening media day when the attraction's new 80-passenger Rotair tram cars a car made to run on a tramway, especially a street railway car.

. A unique feature of the Rotairs is their floors that will rotate slowly -- twice per trip -- as the cars ascend and descend, providing a full 360-degree viewing experience.

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, 10:30 a.m.

WHERE: The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway: take Tramway Road off Highway 111 north of downtown Palm Springs. The Valley Station is about 3-1/2 miles up Tramway Road.

Media representatives will have the opportunity to ride the new Rotair cars to the Tram's Mountain Station that is at an elevation of 8,516 ft. A buffet luncheon will be served at the Top of the Tram restaurant. You will witness flora and fauna changes equivalent to those seen on a motor trip from Sonora, Mexico, to the Arctic Circle Arctic Circle, imaginary circle on the surface of the earth at 66 1-2°N latitude, i.e., 23 1-2° south of the North Pole. It marks the northernmost point at which the sun can be seen at the winter solstice (about Dec.  in Alaska.
