ADVISORY/One Small Step for Senator Glenn, One Large Stride for Healthy Aging.

--(BW HealthWire)--

Glenn's Return to Space Thursday Highlights Need to Fund Aging

Research to Keep America's Aging Population Healthier Longer

Senator John Glenn's planned return to space on October 29th has highlighted the national need to fund aging research. There are now twice as many Americans over age 65 than when Glenn first orbited the Earth in 1962, and the number of Americans 85 years or older is projected to grow from 3.3 million today to 18.9 million by the year 2050.

"Senator Glenn's a real American hero American Hero may refer to:
  • American Hero (novel), written by Larry Beinhart
  • The Greatest American Hero
, and is serving his country again by focussing it's attention on aging research. In laboratories across the country, cutting-edge research is being done on Alzheimer's, diabetes, osteoporosis, and in other areas to ensure that older Americans remain vital, productive and independent," said Stephanie Lederman, Executive Director of the American Federation for Aging Research This article or section is an autobiography, or has been extensively edited by the subject, and may not conform to Wikipedia's NPOV policy.

Medical research into aging is a dramatically growing field, and AFAR is on the forefront of research into age-related diseases and conditions. But much more work needs to be done in these fields to prepare the medical community to meet the growing needs of older Americans.

"Aging research is a great investment. Older people not only to live longer than in previous generations, they also experience much lower rates of disability," added Ms. Lederman. In fact, a recent report from Duke University has shown that the disability rate among Medicare beneficiaries has been dropping by 1.3% a year since 1982. This trend to wellness annually saves the American government $17.3 billion on what is today a $190 billion Medicare bill.

"Glenn's return to space emphasizes the new stereotype on aging. Namely, that it need not be feared but embraced and enjoyed. Indeed, Glenn's trip and the latest research show it's never too late to begin successful aging through exercise and a balanced diet balanced diet
