WHO
AND
WHAT: Former California Governor and current Oakland Mayor Jerry
Brown will address the PCBC Western Building Show in announcing
new solutions to California's housing crisis, Friday June 30 at
San Francisco's Moscone Center. A 9:30 a.m. press briefing will
be followed by a panel presentation, "Creating Tomorrow's
Communities Today."
Background: Among the 1999-2001 goals of Mayor Brown is the vow
to "mobilize the resources of city government to attract 10,000
people to live within the downtown area. The objectives include
lively streets, increased shopping and new places for people to
meet and share the excitement of urban living." Mayor Brown's
"10K" revitalization plan for Oakland is vital not only for that
city's economic health, but as a model for "sustainable"
development in California. The state's current housing crisis is
driving prices out of the range of affordability in many cities
while placing an undue burden on suburban and fringe
developments that have proven so costly to both resources and
families.
Panel Description: Following the press briefing, Mayor Brown
will be joined on the panel, "Creating Tomorrow's Communities
Today," by: Kenneth Agid, vice president of Marketing at Playa
Vista, the largest infill project in the U.S.; Ernesto Vasquez,
a founding principal with MVE and Partners, currently involved
in the creation of over 2,000 residential units in Oakland; and
John Picard, president and founder of E2 Inc., whose current
projects include urban infill projects in Atlanta and
San Francisco (Mission Bay) as well as Playa Vista.
WHEN
AND
WHERE: Friday, June 30, 9:30 a.m., Room 238, the Press Room,
in the Moscone Center's East Mezzanine,
followed by panel at 10:15 a.m. in Room 204.
