BACKGROUND: Northern's MicroGrid(R) power network is an advanced
distributed generation solution that incorporates on-site power
generation, energy storage, and load management subsystems into a
highly reliable, efficient, and robust power system. Northern's
MicroGrid(R) power network combines multiple devices -- including
reciprocating engines (such as natural gas-powered generators), wind
turbines, and solar photovoltaic panels -- into tightly integrated,
small-scale power generation, storage, and distribution network. It is
a tangible example of a progressive new strategy for the emerging
decentralized energy landscape.
The two-year DOE grant secured by Senator Jeffords is supporting the development of the MicroGrid(R) power network and its first implementation in the area known as Mad River Park in Waitsfield. The project is also receiving support from the Washington Electric Cooperative and the Vermont Vermont (vərmŏnt`) [Fr.,=green mountain], New England state of the NE United States. It is bordered by New Hampshire, across the Connecticut R. Department of Public Service.
