What: As parents and teachers continue to confront student
violence in regional middle and high schools, Nobel Peace
Laureate Oscar Arias will bring his message of peace to
300 teenagers this weekend at Drexel.
The former president of Costa Rica, Arias will be in
Philadelphia leading PeaceJam, an international
organization built around Nobel Peace Laureates who work
personally with young people to help them explore ways of
promoting peace and improving their schools and
communities. More than 100 Drexel students will also be
working with Arias and the teens this weekend as PeaceJam
mentors.
Visuals: Against a hip-hop background Arias will energize the crowd
at PeaceJam's opening session when he leads the teenagers
in singing and dancing.
When: Saturday, May 10, 2003, 10:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Where: Drexel University's Main Building Auditorium (32nd and
Chestnut streets)
Background: PeaceJam was launched in February, 1996 and the first
conference was held March 23-24, 1996, at Regis University
in Denver. Eleven Nobel Peace Laureates serve as members
of the PeaceJam.
