The mock trial is intended to foster understanding of the law, court procedures and the legal system; improve students' basic life skills such as listening, speaking, reading and reasoning; and promote cooperation and understanding between the school community and the legal profession. Case topics are carefully selected, with the goals of creating a legal learning experience that is directly relevant to students, where both the law and facts raise real-life issues to students and schools. Although a majority of the students participating plan on pursuing a degree in law, the skills learned in the mock trial provide all with a better understanding of the legal system. Real courtrooms are provided for the trial enactments, with many judges and over 1000 lawyers donating their time statewide as coaches and assistants.
