LADWP's Trees for a Green LA Program Partners With Department of
Recreation and Parks, Symphony in the Glen And Other Community and
City Organizations to Plant 11,000th Tree; City Residents Encouraged
to Sign Up for Workshops and Receive Up to Seven Free Shade Trees
WHAT: Passing the milestone 11,000th tree planted through the
Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's (LADWP)
Trees for a Green LA program, Councilmember Tom LaBonge,
LADWP, Department of Recreation and Parks and other City
officials, plus Symphony In The Glen and community
leaders together will help reforest Griffith Park's
historic Old Zoo Picnic Area, home of The Symphony In
the Glen.
With the start of the spring planting season, officials
also will encourage Los Angeles residents to participate
in Trees for a Green LA, which provides up to seven FREE
five-gallon shade trees to city residents who attend a
two-hour workshop to learn about proper tree planning,
planting and protecting techniques. Once mature, the
trees will provide shade to help reduce home electricity
use and costs by up to 20 percent.
The Symphony In The Glen area will receive 30 new trees
to offer shade and beauty during outdoor summer
concerts. Last year, city officials removed 20 trees in
the area due to insect infestation. The Symphony In The
Glen planting highlights the Trees for a Green LA
public/community planting project component, plus the
Department of Recreation and Parks' park reforestation
efforts in the city.

BACKGROUND: Trees for a Green LA is designed to add thousands of
shade trees in Los Angeles, both at private residences
and in public spaces. Besides reducing energy use, the
trees planted will improve air quality, lessen
greenhouse gas emissions, reduce storm water runoff and
beautify communities. The purpose of The Symphony In
The Glen, entering its 10th anniversary season in summer
2003, is to create a program of free classical music
concerts in Griffith Park.
