EVENT SUMMARY
More than 5,000 bone marrow recipients, their donors, family, and
friends came together for the 28th Annual "Celebration of Life"
Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Reunion at City of Hope Cancer
Center. The Reunion is the largest of its kind and highlighted
first time meetings of bone marrow transplant patients and their
donors, including:
-- Brenda Masuku, a young mother from Johannesburg, South Africa,
who flew across the globe to meet Ashley Wilder, a 12-year-old
girl from Lancaster, Calif., whose life she helped save
through a bone marrow donation.
-- Jim Halbeisen, a father of three adult children and a plant
manager for the Lompoc Federal Penitentiary, was introduced to
his life-saving marrow donor, Alina Martinez, a Cuban
immigrant and graphic designer from Arlington, N.J.
-- Carol Kaufman, a former magazine art director and mother of
two daughters from Carlsbad, Calif., finally met her bone
marrow donor, Kim Katz, a pharmaceutical representative from
Manhattan, N.Y., nearly two years after her transplant.
A highlight of the speaking program was a surprise visit by Dr.
Phil McGraw.
