WHO: Gordon Linton, the longest serving CEO of the U.S. Federal
Transit Administration, is scheduled to appear before the New
York City Council on November 24 at 10:00 a.m. EST to testify
on a bill sponsored by the speaker of the City Council,
Gifford Miller. Linton is currently a senior advisor and vice
president of business development for WageWorks
(www.wageworks.com).
WHAT: The bill in question will require New York City businesses
with 50 or more employees to offer pre-tax transit benefit
programs. These programs, already offered by more than 9,000
New York area companies, could save NYC businesses over
$62 million in payroll taxes and New York commuters over
$588 million in personal tax savings each year according to
the bill's sponsors. It is estimated that each participant
could save $300 per year.
New York City has the largest transit ridership in the
country, and this is the most expansive act by a city
government to mandate a transit benefit.. If the bill
passes, other major cities are likely to follow.
OTHER: In addition to his position at WageWorks, Linton serves as
a VP with the WageWorks Center for Commuter Studies. The
Center recently released its first-ever commuter survey,
which highlights commuter insights, behaviors and
preferences of New York City commuters among others. (Other
markets include Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles and
San Francisco.)
MEDIA: The City Council hearing is open to the public. For more
information or to schedule an interview with Gordon Linton
to learn more about why pre-tax commuter benefit programs
make sense for NYC employees, contact us to reserve time on
his schedule. Linton is also available to discuss the
survey.
