WHAT: The Children and Families Commission of Orange County will
hold its annual Community Awards Program and present the
distinguished Peter A. Hartman Award to the most outstanding
community program. Named for the former superintendent of the
Saddleback Unified School District and a champion of children's
issues, Peter A. Hartman, Ph.D (1938-2001), the Hartman award is
given out to the community program having the greatest impact in
serving the needs of Orange County's children in getting them as
ready as possible for school.
WHO: The program selected this year for the Hartman award is the Oak
View Preschool and Education Resource Center based in Huntington
Beach.
The Children and Families Commission of Orange County was
created as a result of Proposition 10, the California Children
and Families Act of 1998. The proposition added a 50-cent sales
tax on tobacco products sold in California and requires the funds
raised be used to support education, health and childcare
programs that promote healthy early childhood development from
the prenatal stage to age five.

WHERE: The Discovery Science Museum in Santa Ana. Interested

WHY: To recognize examples of outstanding programs that further the
intent of Proposition 10 in preparing children to be healthy and
ready to learn when they enter the school system.
