WHAT: The United States Tennis Association (USTA), Northern
California Section, is honoring the values and
achievements of tennis star Michael Chang by
establishing the Michael Chang Scholarship, an $8,000,
four-year college scholarship which will be awarded to
a Northern California junior player of Asian descent.
The announcement will be made at "Michael Chang
Appreciation Night " at Seascape Sports & Racquet Club
in Aptos, CA, site of the $50,000 Seascape Challenger,
July 12-20, the largest men's professional circuit
event in Northern California.
Chang, formerly a No. 2 player on the ATP Tour, has
announced that 2003 will be his last year in
professional tennis. Chang turned pro in 1988 and held
his career-high ranking in 1996. He won the French
Open in 1989, and in 1966 was the runner-up at both
the US Open and Australian Open. This is his third
appearance at the Seascape tournament.
