Applicants are asked to submit a written proposal that explains

how their research could be used to develop a new product or

service.

Merrill Lynch will award the following grants for winning entries:

-- 1st Place - $50,000 grant (1 winner)

-- 2nd Place - $20,000 grant (2 winners)

-- 3rd Place - $10,000 grant (3 winners)

-- 4th Place - $5,000 grant (6 winners)

-- Six University Grants - $5,000 Each

WHO: Applicants who successfully defended their dissertations between

January 1, 1999 and December 1, 2000 at an accredited accredited

recognition by an appropriate authority that the performance of a particular institution has satisfied a prestated set of criteria.

WHEN: The deadline for submissions is December 15, 2000.

WHY: Through the competition, the Merrill Lynch Forum seeks to spark

new levels of creativity and ingenuity at the world's research

universities. The goal is to encourage entrepreneurial literacy

among the academic research community. The Innovation Grants

Competition also aims to make academic research more accessible

and relevant to the public at large.
