WHAT: To celebrate the opening of the 33rd California International
Antiquarian Book Fair, Mayor Riordan and fifth-grade students
from Loyola Village Elementary School visit for a special tour
spotlighting famous books, letters, maps and other original
documents that have shaped American history. The Mayor and
students will learn about, examine and even hold rare volumes
during this walk through history led by &uot;George Washington.&uot;
WHY: One of the world's premier exhibitions of rare books, the event
brings more than 180 top booksellers from the United States,
Canada, Europe and Australia to Los Angeles. The Book Fair
features spectacular displays ranging from illuminated
manuscripts and Shakespeare folios to first editions by the
likes of Austen, Dickens, Hemingway, Kerouac and even Dr. Seuss.
Books on every subject imaginable -- from art, architecture and
Americana to science, medicine, law and philosophy -- are
available. The Book Fair will attract more than 10,000 book
lovers and ring up millions of dollars in sales during its run
from Feb. 11 to 13.
WHO: Visuals and interview opportunities include:
-- Mayor Riordan and students examining items such as a 1680 map
of California, letters written by Benjamin Franklin and
several U.S. presidents, and original manuscripts by great
American writers;
-- David Brass, chairman of the Antiquarian Booksellers
Association of America Southern California Chapter, unveils
the Book Fair's most expensive item -- a $1.5 million Bible
from 1410;
-- The finest booksellers from around the world displaying
famous and beautiful books;
-- &uot;Hollywood, By The Book&uot; -- a special exhibit exploring the
art of turning great books into great films through a display
of books, scripts, photographs, posters, personal papers and
other behind-the-scene materials from the
USC Cinema-Television Library.
