"One Book, One City L.A."


WHAT:        Mayor Jim Hahn and legendary, local author Ray
             Bradbury will announce the grand prize winners of
             Los Angeles Unified School District's student art
             and essay contest at the Los Angeles Times Book
             Festival. More than 451 students participated in the
             contest, part of the Mayor's month-long "One Book,
             One City L.A." reading initiative, during which
             Angelenos read Bradbury's science-fiction classic
             "Fahrenheit 451."

             Bradbury also will be a featured speaker at the
             Festival of Books, discussing "Fahrenheit 451," which
             shot to the top of the Los Angeles Times bestsellers
             list for paperbacks for the first time ever during
             the week of April 14.

BACKGROUND:  Mayor Jim Hahn's "One Book, One City L.A.," sponsored
             by SBC Pacific Bell, is the first-ever citywide
             reading initiative. During April, more than 30
             events took place throughout Los Angeles, including
             a "town hall"-style book discussion at the El Portal
             Theater broadcast live on KPCC 89.3FM, book club
             discussions at Barnes & Noble and Coffee Bean & Tea
             Leaf, movie screenings of the 1966 film, as well as
             public readings and book discussions at library
             branches across the city.
