Risk factors include age (after age 50), family history of colorectal cancer, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, benign polyps, physical inactivity, and a diet high in fat. Screening Option Available
Why: This year, there is a new, innovative screening option
available that you will want to take note of as you plan
stories on colorectal cancer.
PreGen-Plus(TM), one of the first commercial applications
utilizing knowledge about the human genome, analyzes human DNA
extracted from a stool sample for abnormalities associated
with the presence of colorectal cancer. Unlike other screening
methods, PreGen-Plus requires no special bowel preparation,
stool handling or diet alterations.
PreGen-Plus is designed to make colorectal cancer screening
more comfortable and less intimidating. The test has only
recently been introduced, but has already been successful in
saving the lives of many people who had avoided screening
because other options were viewed as uncomfortable, invasive
or inaccurate.
Who: EXACT Sciences, a Massachusetts-based applied genomics
company, developed this new non-invasive screening test for
the early detection of colorectal cancer. It is EXACT
Sciences' belief that by removing some of the common barriers
associated with current screening methods, more people will be
screened for colorectal cancer and, thus, more lives will be
saved.
Facts About Colorectal Cancer:
-- Approximately 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are
diagnosed each year, resulting in approximately 57,000
deaths annually.
-- Ninety percent of all colorectal cancers occur in the 50+
age group, which encompasses 80 million Americans.
-- A recent study by the Partnership for Prevention showed
that fewer than half of the population aged 50 and older
receive any type of screening.
-- Two-thirds of colorectal cancers are detected at a stage
when the five-year survival rate is less than 50%. If
colorectal cancer is detected at an early stage, survival
rates approach 90%.
-- Colorectal cancer can go undetected since it frequently is
without symptoms until reaching a late, less curable
stage. Symptoms of colorectal cancer, including blood in
stool, are not always or consistently associated with the
presence of the disease. DNA changes - which PreGen-Plus
looks for - are the hallmark of EVERY cancer.
