Vodafone initially had made a hostile bid but returned with a sweeter offer. Mannesmann shareholders reportedly have until February 17 to make their decision. If accepted, the deal would represent the biggest corporate takeover in history. Vodafone became the world's largest mobile phone business last year by buying AirTouch Communications, a leading U.S. wireless company. Vodafone reportedly is planning to connect AirTouch with Bell Atlantic's wireless unit, a joint venture that would result in the largest wireless service in the U.S.
