Small-business owners and entrepreneurs have made Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, the small-business capital of the world. The first-ever Los Angeles Times Los Angeles Times Morning daily newspaper. Established in 1881, it was purchased and incorporated in 1884 by Harrison Gray Otis (1837–1917) under The Times-Mirror Co. (the hyphen was later dropped from the name). Small Business Strategies Conference gives thousands of small-business owners practical and inspirational advice from some of the nation's most successful entrepreneurs and business leaders. The two-day conference features 47 educational panel discussions in six essential business categories: technology, finance, advertising and marketing, growth, managing people and Entrepreneurship 101. In addition, special "Ask the Experts" sessions give attendees the opportunity to meet with business consultants for free advice about legal, accounting, marketing, personnel and finance issues. Results of the recent Times-USC Marshall School Southern California Business Climate Survey will also be discussed and distributed. Six nationally recognized speakers will be featured: Jan Davidson, a former teacher who began an educational-software company in her garage and sold it for $1.15 billion; Earl G. Graves, chairman and publisher of Black Enterprise magazine; Nell Newman and Peter Meehan, principals of Newman's Own Organics: The Second Generation; Paul Orfalea Paul Orfalea (Arabic: بول أورفاليا), nicknamed "Kinko" because of his curly red hair, born in Los Angeles, California to parents of Lebanese decent, founded the copy-chain , president and founder of Kinko's; and Jack Trout Jack Trout is an owner of Trout & Partners consulting firm.
