WHAT: The Times is launching Southern California Living, The
Times' new feature section, which replaces the newspaper's
Life & Style section. Southern California Living will offer
readers a lively, topical section with a fresh new look. It
will feature profiles, stories, just off-the-news reporting
about working, values, giving, a home section, fashion
section and a daily children's page. Also included every day
will be familiar syndicated features, comics, the crossword
puzzle, the bridge column and expanded coverage of books.
WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, and six days a week, Sunday through
Friday.
FIRST
ISSUE: Page 1 profile on Al Joyner. In an exclusive interview with
staff writer, Pamela Warrick, Al Joyner talks about his
life, marriage to the late Florence Griffith Joyner and his
relationship with seven-year-old daughter Mary Ruth.
Also in the premiere issue:
-- Sandy Banks' column.
-- Page 2. A must-read for the time-constrained reader, with
items which will include news, trends and gossip.
-- The Kids' Reading Room. A full page for children that
includes a daily serialized story, interactive games and
book reviews.
-- Section Gee!, the place to find readers' favorite syndicated
columns such as Dear Abby and Ann Landers plus comics, the
horoscope, crossword puzzle and bridge column.
-- Books coverage. Book reviews that feature the hottest and

WHY: The launch of Southern California Living comes after a
year-long effort to provide a timely, entertaining, and
enriching section that will attract more women and children
into the paper as well as offer local and national
advertisers new advertising opportunities.
