Annual Conference Details:
What: More than 2,500 city officials from around the state will attend
the League of California Cities' upcoming annual conference. The
League has held an annual conference since the organization's
creation in 1898.
When: The conference will be held Friday, October 2 through Sunday,
October 4
Where: at the Long Beach Convention Center.
Why: The annual conference provides city officials an opportunity to
learn from one another and industry experts at educational
seminars on topics such as fiscal stability, welfare reform,
environmental equity, electricity restructuring, engaging the
public, economic development and strategic planning, among
others.
It is also at the annual conference that the League's new
officers are installed and general resolutions, which shape
League policy and legislative activity, are adopted. City
officials will also have an opportunity to hear from 1998
gubernatorial candidates, Lieutenant Governor Gray Davis and
Attorney General Dan Lungren.
Special Events and Attractions:
Friday, October 2
10:30 a.m.-noon -- Long Beach Mayor Beverly O'Neill welcomes
attendees; Kevin Star, the state librarian of California, offers
keynote address; Attorney General and 1998 gubernatorial
candidate Dan Lungren addresses attendees at opening general
session.
2 p.m. -- General Resolutions Committee prepares final resolutions for
consideration and vote at annual business session on Saturday.
Saturday, October 3
9-10:30 a.m. -- Ron Heifetz, author of "Leadership Without Easy
Answers" and director of the Leadership Education Project at
Harvard's JFK School of Government, addresses attendees.
1:30 p.m. -- Attendees vote on proposed resolutions, which shape
League policy and legislative activities, at annual business
session.
Sunday, October 4
9-10 a.m. -- Award-winning speaker Rosita Perez, Creative Living
Programs, Inc., is the featured speaker at the general session.
11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. -- Presentations of the League's Legislator of
the Year Award, Presidents Award, and California Cities Helen
Putnam Award for Excellence take place at concluding general
session brunch; Lieutenant Governor and 1998 gubernatorial
candidate Gray Davis addresses attendees.
Ongoing
-- Exposition: This year's exposition will feature more than 260
vendors and companies showcasing their services and products, and
will include a large simulated forest display.
-- CityBooks: The League's traveling bookstore will feature the
latest and best resources to help city officials be effective
leaders and managers. Hundred of titles relevant to cities will
be available, including books by authors speaking at the
conference.

-- Members of the media who would like to attend or cover the event
receive a complimentary registration.
