TOPIC: A growing body of research implies that employees who survive layoffs
may be prone to the same psychological stress as those of their pink-slipped
co-workers, including depression, anxiety, social isolation, suspicion and
stress-related illness. According to a story in the Washington Post, some
experts reportedly are coining a new term -- "layoff-survivor sickness" or
"survivor syndrome" -- to describe the ailments observed in many employees who
work for companies that are going through downsizing. Experts in the story said
employers often don't understand nor plan for the psychological toll of
downsizing, which reportedly could harm the company's productivity in the long
