What: In support of its mission to enhance the quality of life
for those living with, through and beyond cancer, the
Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF), along with the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will bring
together more than 100 experts on issues related to cancer
survivorship in order to help define the role of public
health organizations within the cancer survivorship arena.
Through the "Building Partnerships to Advance Cancer
Survivorship and Public Health" workshop, the LAF and CDC
will develop recommendations constituting a National
Action Plan on Cancer Survivorship. The plan, which will
encompass aspects of survivorship including research,
advocacy, surveillance/monitoring and programs
implementation, will be made available to state-based
public health organizations as a template by which they
can pattern comprehensive cancer control and survivorship
programs.
When/Where: The "Building Partnerships to Advance Cancer Survivorship
and Public Health" workshop will begin with registration
and opening ceremonies on Sunday, June 8, from 5:00 p.m. -
6:30 p.m. Sessions will be held Monday, June 9, from
8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and on Tuesday, June 10, from
9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. All events will take place at the
Marriott Austin at the Capitol, 701 E 11th St., Austin,

Who: Michael Samuelson, co-founder of the National Center for
Health Promotion, author and cancer survivor, will deliver
the opening keynote address, followed by a statement from
Lance Armstrong from Europe. Former Austin mayor Kirk
Watson, a survivor of testicular cancer, will conclude the
workshop. Throughout the event, Doug Ulman, director of
survivorship at the LAF, will be present at the workshop
to answer questions regarding the efforts of the LAF in
support of cancer survivorship programs.
